Longterm readers may recall a segment I used to run on the old site called The Thirst. Basically it was a place where I shared beer related articles that I thought people may find interesting. I’ve come across a small glut of them in the last couple of weeks and thought I should revive the segment to share them with you. Whether it’ll return longterm or if this is a one night only special, we will all have to wait and see…
The Dog Days Are Over (here) – In this very long piece, Topher from Wildflower talks openly and honestly about the issues they had with their yeast last year. It’s strikes the balance nicely of being scientific, whilst being easy enough for most to understand. He talks about his ideology surrounding beer & about how they are moving forward with a new foraged yeast culture.
Building A Nation (here) – Everyone reading this should probably be reading everything Lars writes. He’s so good & the definitive voice on Northern European Farmhouse Brewing. The post is ostensibly about the cultural significance & then decline of Farmhouse Brewing in Estonia, however it verges into some timely Soviet Union history.
Story Behind the Rebrand (here) – Chris tells the story of why Mr Banks Brewing became known as Banks Brewing & how their new look came to be. The story starts on the train to the AIBA’s in 2021 & involves beer being sent to an address in Austin, Texas before a bourbon behemoth stops what would surely have been the biggest thing to happen to Australian craft beer. Intrigued?
Bottle Beer Later (here) – You’ve probably seen this pop up on social media/news sources by now, for those of you who haven’t. Pravda are a Ukrainian brewery based in Lviv, who have turned their skills towards making molotov cocktails to help ward off the Russian invaders. Fittingly they’re using labelled bottles of their beer ПТН Х̆ЛО, which roughly translates as “Putin’s a Dick” or to Australianize it “Putin’s a Wanker”. There is a whole wikipedia page about this is you want to head down a rabbit hole… (link)
Inmorales Brewery Gofundme (here) – Last but not least guys, if you’ve got a few extra $’s lying around why don’t you chip in and help Natalia brew her next beer. She’s working with the team at Westside Ale Works & is incredibly passionate! Hopefully you’ll be able to see Inmorales up on the site soon.
I’m sure I had another piece to put in here, but for the life of me can’t remember it! In any case guys I hope you enjoy reading these. Let me know if you want to see more of this sort of stuff at angus@beeroclockaustralia.com. A quick shout out to Big Girl Small World, who’s picture I’ve co-opted at the top. I’ve been meaning to take my own version of this for about 6 years and haven’t got around to it & yours is so great! If this is to become a regular segment again I will definitely* finally get round to it.
*definitely is a very loose term here at Beer O’Clock Australia…
Remember it’s always Beer O’Clock somewhere in the world!
