Last night produced some great football and some really solid beers. Group B is widely considered the group of death on the pitch, and with the lineup of beers its also the group of death in the beer tournament. I think it’s fair to say we’ve all had Heineken before, but the Kissmeyer Red IPA is new to me. I did have the pleasure of meeting the brewer of Kissmeyer a few months back and he said I would be impressed. It’s time to see if Anders was right, can Denmark knock off the Netherlands giant?

This is a Dutch brewed bottle of Heineken, and it pours like your standard Heineken. Beautiful body and head with a relatively low key nose. The flavour is simple and goes down sensationally. It’s such a solid lager.

Denmark’s craft beer entry has a deep amber body with a large cream coloured head. The nose offers lots of citrus and piney notes. This isn’t the hop bomb I was hoping for, it’s almost spicy in a strange way. Kissmeyer Red IPA is almost more of a Barleywine than and IPA, still delicious though.

Despite the fantastic drinkability of the Heineken it just didn’t have the quality to beat out the Danish Kissmeyer Red IPA. The allround performance of the Dane’s was far superior to that of the Dutch. Heineken though would definitely be one of the candidates if I was to pick a beer to drink while watch the soccer. Still wasn’t enough to get the points in this group of death, it’s going to be an uphill task for the Dutch to qualify from here.

2-1 win to DENMARK
On the pitch: I thought my tip for the first game last night wasn’t that far off, Lewandowski scored for Poland before Greece equalized. I couldn’t have been more wrong about the Russians though… Tonight though, the Dutch should be too strong for the Danes on the pitch. They have way too much firepower with Robben, Van Persie, Sneijder etc. The Danes looked solid defensively against the Socceroos last week but didn’t offer anything going forward. Holland to win 2 or 3 to nil.
