Food
It has become a running joke that pretty much every brewer in Victoria serves pizza. Whilst that is not entirely true, it is true that a majority of brewers serves pizza of varying standards. Here we run through a few of the culinary highlights of our visits across Victoria.
King River Brewing – Pizza
I wasn’t expecting much, but wow these guys blew me away! They make pizzas compared to those at 400 Gradi, the Lygon St restaurant that has previously taken out the World’s Best Margherita Pizza at the World Pizza Championships (yes, that’s a thing!).
Bodriggy Brewing Co – Latin American
I’m pretty sure John Dominguez is the only brewery chef I’ve named by name to date. The Mexican-born chef has worked at the likes of Noma & Dinner by Heston & was given carte-blanche to create his own menu at Bodriggy. The jalapeño stuffed with smoked swordfish, presented as a fish taco was one of my culinary highlights of 2019!
Westside Ale Works – Pizza
It’s a very different pizza to those served at King River, but they’re also a wonderful accompanyment to beer. They’re more in the American mould, with a thicker base & more toppings. It’s one of the places I always want to head to for a fed & a beer.
True South – Argentinian
It makes sense that a restaurant that used to be a brewery makes this list. Their fish dishes in particular stood out; with their fish tacos & snapper cerviche highlights. The Chorizo Criollo & empanadas were also really good.
Wolf of the Willows – Thai Green Mussels
This is exactly what it sounds like; mussels swimming in Thai Green curry served with fries. It was amazing & paired so well with the beer. It was produced by Van Go, a modern Vietnamese Food Truck, but I think they have a permanent spot at Wolf of the Willows so I’m counting it.
Bridge Road – Pretzels
It wouldn’t be a round up of the best food at Victorian breweries without mentioning the superb pretzels from the stalwarts of the industry; Bridge Road Brewers. They’re perfect to kick off your day of brewery hopping or when you’re a few deep.
