For the Czechs this match in the beer tournament is a dead rubber, they are already through to the next round. The Poles need a point to see them progress and keep their destiny in their own hands. The Czech Republic will be represented by arguably their most famous beer Pilsner Urquell, the beer that has had the biggest influence on the lagers we drink today. The Poles will hang their hopes on O.K. Beer from Okocim, the name isn’t convincing and I’ve never had it, so hopefully for them its better than OK!

Pilsner Urquell is one of my favourite pilsners. It is well balanced and has that Saaz hops flavour that provides excellent bitterness. It’s a lovely lager that you know exactly what you will get everytime.
O.K. Beer is a very different style lager to Pilsner Urquell, but it’s also very good! The pour is good, the head doesn’t have much retention. But the flavour is excellent, it’s mostly malty upfront with a unique bed of hops, which have a heap of different elements. It’s a really interesting lager! |
Okocim O.K. Beer POLAND Euro Pale Lager 5.6% |
The game of the group stage so far! Both the Czechs and the Poles put up excellent lagers that said something about the identity of beers in each country. The Pilsner Urquell really hit the spot for the first beer after a busy day, while the O.K. Beer was so much more than that. Both are beers I will buy again and a draw was the only fair result, I couldn’t split them despite the different styles. It sees both countries progress to the knockout stages of the beer tournament.
