Braeside Brewing Co opened the doors to its brewpub in November 2019. The journey for Rame Abdallah, his wife Anni, & brewer Charlie Thompson had started in earnest almost 3 years before after a passing exchange between the two men during a night shift working together at Dan Murphys.

What followed was years of research before finally settling on their site on Governor Road, Mordialloc. The bayside suburb was always the first choice for the Braeside team, with Rame having spent a lot of his childhood in the area & resonating with the community vibe.

Their venue reflects the importance of community to the team. There’s loads of big family sized (6+ seats) tables & a kids play area. It’s a really slick looking venue with a wood cladded wall running down the left side of the building, black fixtures and slanting roof, and a long stone bar complete with giant pizza oven (which is pumping out really good pizza as an aside…)

The brewery takes up the back corner of the warehouse. It’s not huge at 5hL, but is more than sufficient for a brewery intending to serve it’s local community with plenty of tanks & is on display so should spark plenty of interest. As you continue out the back there is an undercover decking area, perfect for warm summer afternoons.

Since COVID-19 hit the team have been packaging their beers, something that wasn’t part of the plan this early. For such a young brewery the pandemic couldn’t have come at a worse time, but it has been something of a blessing in disguise with Braeside getting their beers into the hands of a wider consumer base, who will hopefully visit their taproom as restrictions ease. I know I’ll be visiting again when I can!

One of the few positives of COVID was the extra tank space that brewers had to play with. Braeside Brewing used that tank space to lager a Pilsner for 100 days! The result is a lovely biscuity lager with moderate grassy bitterness. It’s incredibly clean & quite moorish, making you want more as your glass empties.

Remember it’s always Beer O’Clock somewhere in the world!
