Beers of the Week is something new we’re going to do on Beer O’Clock Australia to give you a bit of an insight behind the curtain. Each week I’m going to post three beers that tickled my fancy over the last week or so, whether they be the best beers or simply beers that intrigued me. Hope you enjoy the new segment!

Epic Hop Zombie

Epic Hop Zombie was one of the first Imperial IPA’s I enjoyed way back in 2011. Many beers from that era haven’t stood the test of time, with the explosion of craft beer. Hop Zombie is one that has! It’s big; with hops dominating malt & plenty of bitterness, which may shock recent converts to IPAs. There’s loads of grapefruit, mango & pine hop notes. It’s superb! Seek one out if you haven’t already!

King River Belgian Pale Ale

King River were without a shadow of a doubt my best find during The Year of The Local. These guys are producing a mix of traditional European styles alongside more hop forward offerings & I was blown away by how well they were doing both! So much so that I’m now a member of their Brew Crew & get a quarterly mixed-case delivery. This Belgian Pale Ale was in the latest delivery & it’s superb! It’s subtle, with sweet honey malts & spicy yeast the defining characteristics whilst the tropical hops take a back seat but balance the beer nicely. I’d wager it’s the best Belgian Pale Ale brewed in the country!

Schneider Weisse Tap04 – Festweisse

The old idiom goes that you should make hay while the sun is shining & that’s exactly what I intend to do with the plethora of fresh German stock that normally lasts on our shelves less than a month. TAP04 is one of the classic Schneider Weisse beers. This is a “FestWeisse”, which basically means it’s a wheat beer you can drink far too many of! It’s brewed with New Zealand Cascade hops, which provides citrus hop characters that complement the yeast beautifully. You’ll have to be quick if you want to try this – as they’ll normally be sold out by October…

Hope you guys enjoyed the second installment of Beers of the Week. Please send any feedback to angus@beeroclockaustralia.com. Cheers!

Remember it’s always Beer O’Clock somewhere in the world!
